Description : Characteristic shape of the shrimps belonging to the Caridina genus, medium sized rostrum curved toward the bottom. See this picture on the petshrimp.com forum.
Behaviour : Excellent gregarious specie, it must absolutely live in groups of 6 individuals of the same specie no less.
Life span :
Feeding habits : Omnivorous with a strong vegetarian tendency this shrimp spends a lot of time in Java moss or on the ground collecting it’s food. According to the observations of the author this relatively shy shrimp is a bit shy with dried commercial food.
Sexual dismorphism : The female are larger than the males that bear their male sexual appendages on their second pair of pleopods.
Reproduction : To our knowledge there is no information relative to the reproduction cycle in its natural habitant or in captivity. We can however base ourselves on the information relative to Caridina propinqua that needs a salt water stage to complete development of pelagic larva. See this picture of a berried Caridina cf. propinqua
Specificity : The status of this shrimp is uncertain and will probably be studied more in detail shortly. The morphologic characteristics of Caridina propinqua have allowed Werner Klotz to establish a link with this orange shrimp imported on the European market since a few months. It was named Caridina cf. propinqua (See the definition of confer ) and see the first presentation of Caridina sp. Orange realized on Crusta-fauna.
